BackText
Embryonic connective tissue: derives from mesoderm (middle embryonic germ layer), present in embryo and within umbilical fold
-gives rise to various connective tissues in body

Loose connective tissue: found in close association with most epithelia
-extracellular matrix contains loosely arranged collagen fibers and numerous cells
-some cells, fibroblasts, form and maintain extracellular matrix
-most cells migrants from vascular system and associated with immune system

Dense connective tissue: where strength is only required, collagen fibers more numerous and densely packed
-cells relatively sparse and limited to fibroblast

Specialized Connective Tissues: include bone, cartilage and blood
-characterized by specialized nature of extracellular matrix

-Ex. bone matrix = mineralized by calcium and phosphate molecules associated with collagen fibers
-Ex. collagen matrix = large amount of water bound to hylaluronan aggregates
-Ex. blood matrix = cells and matrix in form of protein-rich fluid called plasma
