Limb and body wall muscles develop from {{c1::myotomes of the somites}} and {{c1::lateral plate mesoderm}} and are innervated by {{c1::ventral rami of the spinal nerves}}. Adjacent myotome segments may {{c1::merge}}, forming muscles innervated by more than one {{c1::spinal nerve}}, which leads to the formation of the {{c1::brachial and lumbosacral plexuses}}

True back muscles develop from {{c1::dorsal myotomes}} and are innervated by {{c1::dorsal rami}}
Smooth muscle of the gut and cardiac muscle derive from {{c1::visceral mesoderm}}, not from somites.
