Certain types of misfolded proteins can act as infectious agents that can be transmitted from one organism to another. These proteins, known as {{c1::prions}} can induce correctly folded proteins to misfold and become more of themselves.

Prions are the underlying cause of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and its transmissible variant, mad cow disease.
