In multicellular organisms, mutations are passed to the next generation only if they occur in {{c1::gametes}} or precursors to {{c1::gametes}} (germline mutations).

Somatic mutations, which occur in non-gametes, are not hereditary but can affect the individual and contribute to aging and disease.
