Malaria: Pathogenesis

P.falciparum has greater virulence associated with high levels of parasitemia that may lead to:
  • severe {{c1::anemia}}, 
  • {{c1::cerebral}} symptoms, 
  • {{c1::renal}} failure, 
  • {{c1::pulmonary}} edema, 
  • and {{c1::death}}, depending on the susceptibility of the host
  • {{c1::P. vivax, P. ovale, P. knowlesi, and P. malariae}} cause low levels of parasitemia, mild anemia, and , in very rare instances, {{c2::splenic}} rupture and {{c2::nephrotic}} syndrome.
