Q: How do the kidneys adapt to increased dietary potassium intake?
Back
Two mechanisms are involved:
- Elevated plasma K+ increases Na+/K+-ATPase activity in collecting duct principal cells, which increases intracellular K+ and promotes K+ secretion.
- Elevated plasma K+ stimulates the adrenal cortex to release aldosterone, which increases Na+ permeability in the luminal cell membrane, enhances Na+/K+-ATPase activity, increases K+ permeability, and boosts cell metabolism, promoting increased K+ secretion.
