Why is it important what we look at feeds of a DM basis?

Balancing rations based on dry matter is important for two main reasons, comparison and economics. It is more consistent to compare the nutrient content of rations of a dry matter basis compared to wet matter. Total nutrients per ration will stay the same. However, the density of the nutrients may very on how moist/dry the feedstuffs are. Economics is the second big player in dry matter. Produces may change feedstuffs depending on the markets at hands. This is a very common tactic in the beef and dairy industry.
