Intersection between consent and shared decision making

• Shared decision making is not used in all circumstances.
  
  • A high risk condition, such as breast cancer, with potentially equivalent or nearly equivalent treatment options requires a lot of interaction with the patient and assessment of what outcome is most important to the patient, for example, longest life or preservation of the breast.
