How can ruminants utilize a non-protein nitrogen source?

Urea is a Non protein Nitrogen. It can be fed to ruminants, and it will be converted to ammonia
in the rumen for microbes to use for proteins. Ammonia can also diffuse across the rumen wall
into the portal vein to be detoxified and excreted by the liver as Urea.
