What is the mechanism of action of botox?
Back
Inhibits presynaptic release of ACH from motor neurons at the neuromuscular junction leading to flaccid paralysis
More specifically, by cleaving protein SNAP-25 (apart of SNARE complex) within nerve terminals, botox prevents normal vesicular transport and release of acetylcholine from the motor nerve terminals into the neuromuscular junction
Also affects afferent nervous system by decreasing the sensory response of C-fibers
