PO drugs: can include tablets/coatedT/syrups/powders,etc
- Barriers to absorption: the GI epithelial lining, the drug must go {{c1::through cells, not between}} cells; the capillary wall
- Absorption can be slow or variable, have to take into account {{c1::enterohepatic}} recirculation
- Pros: Easy, convenient, often inexpensive, ideal for self administration, and potentially reversible
- Cons: variability, inaction of some drugs d/t gastric acid/digestive enzymes, {{c2::first pass}} effect, possible N/V from local irritation, and pt must be conscious, cooperative, and able to swallow
