Why is warfarin contraindicated in pregnancy?
Back
Warfarin, a vitamin K antagonist, is a teratogen that can cross from the mother to the fetus. As a clot inhibitor, warfarin can cause fetal internal bleeding and lead to anemia. Warfarin also inhibits osteocalcin and decreases bone growth, greatly increasing the risk of developmental deformities, stillbirths, and spontaneous abortions.
