What are obsessions and compulsions?

Obsessions: recurrent and persistent thoughts, urges, or images that are experienced as intrusive and unwanted
Compulsions: repetitive behaviors or mental acts that an individual feels driven to perform in response to an obsession or according to rules that must be applied rigidly; inappropriate in nature
**most pts will recognize the inappropriateness of the behaviors and will often hide their compulsions, can lead to social isolation and depression
